Bozeat Windmill Singers - News

This is the site for people who want to join or support The Bozeat Windmill Singers, a mixed four part choir for experienced and novice singers; currently of approximately Thirty-five members, that meets Tuesday evenings during school term time at the St. Mary's Church Community Hall, Allens Hill, in the village. We sing a broad range of musical genre, ranging from modern and popular, show songs and medleys, through to light classical etc.

Our Summer Charity Concert was held on Saturday 20 July 2024 to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity. The total money raised was £672.00. There were 20 items on the programme including solos, poems and full choir pieces. A good time was had by all.

Fifteen choir members performed a short early afternoon concert at the Salvation Army Citadel in Rushden on 16 May 2024. We sang Adiemus, The Lord is my Shepherd, Look at The World, A Flower Remembered, a solo by Paul-The Honeysuckle and the Bindweed and back to the choir with Try To Remember. Ellie sang The Second Minuet, followed by the choir singing Home Is A Special Kind Of Feeling. Lyndis read a poem The Alto's Lament, then the choir sang Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Feed The Birds both from Mary Poppins. We finished the concert with Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

The choir gave a concert on Saturday 23 March 2024 at the The Heritage Chapel and Halls, 20 - 28 Park Road, Rushden, to raise funds for the restoration of these wonderful buildings. The performance consisted of 15 pieces sung by the choir and three solo items and a monologue.

On the evening of Wednesday 13 December 2023 the choir gave a short carol concert for the Gateway Group at the Hope Methodist Church in Higham Ferrers. It was a very enjoyable evening with an enthusiastic audience.

The Choir sang at the Easton Maudit harvest festival on Sunday 24 September, joining the congregation for the nine Harvest Hymns and singing three choir pieces.

We held our 30th anniversary summer concert on Saturday 15 July 2023. The choir performed 17 items, with three solo pieces and two monologues. The concert was a great success, raising £670.80 for the charity Marie Curie.

The choir held a charity concert on 29 April for The Olney Newton Link at The United Reform Church, Olney. The performance consisted of 17 pieces of varied music with the full choir and also a solo and two monologues.

We had our winter social evening at The Miller, Great Doddington on Saturday 21 January 2023. We had a lovely meal followed by a light hearted quiz. Many thanks to Lorraine and Jenny for organising the event and to the staff at the restaurant for looking after us so well. Click on the link to see what's available at the Miller.

Our Christmas concert was held on 10 December in our rehearsal venue St. Mary's Church Community Hall, Allens Hill, Bozeat. The guests of honour were the chairman of North Northants County Council Cllr Larry Henson and consort Mrs Christine Gilby. The concert started a little after 7.30pm with two traditional carols, Gaudete! (14th century) and The Boar's Head, followed by Love Changes Everything from Aspects Of Love (Lloyd Webber, Hart and Black) and Can You Feel The Love Tonight (Elton John and Tim Rice). The audience were then invited to sing along with Roy. The choir then sang The Music Of The Night from Phantom of the Opera, followed by A Whole New World (Aladdin's Theme), after which the choir ladies sang Wherever You Are, which was made famous by the Army Wives television performance. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, The Sound of Music Medley and Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, took us to the interval. We restarted with two carols, Once In Royal Davids City and Oh Come All Ye Faithful. Paul sang a solo followed by the choir singing the Holly and the Ivy and Walking In The Air (the theme from The Snowman). Christine and Ellie sang a duet, after which the choir sang the 12 Days of Christmas. Marian recited a topical poem and the choir sang two Christmas songs, Rudolf The Red nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells and our last carol Hark The Herald Angels Sing. Thanks were given to Anna (Musical Director) and to Sue (pianist) with flowers presented to both; finally, the choir performed We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

The Cogenhoe concert was held in Saint Peters Church on Saturday 12 November 2022 and had a remembrance theme. We sang 16 pieces and The Sound of Music Medley. We received a very warm welcome from an appreciative audience on our return to this venue after four years away.

On Tuesday 27 September 2022 we held our first public concert since Covid 19 restrictions ended. The venue was St. Mary's Church Community Hall, Allens Hill, Bozeat. The concert started at 7.30. We began by singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, from memory, followed by Adiemus. We then had a duet of The Second Minuet, followed by the choir singing, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, a poem, and the choir again with, Look at the World and A Flower Remembered. We had a short intermission and restarted with The Music of the Night and The Medley From Evita. We then had a poem and a solo "Beneath Thy Window". The choir sang You've Got A friend, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and Singing In The Rain. There was a break for a small raffle, after which the choir sang The Sound Of Music Medley. Thanks were given to Anna (Musical Director) and to Sue (pianist) with flowers presented; finally, there was a rousing performance of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

Choir rehearsals started again on Tuesday 6th September 2022 at 7:30pm, in the St. Mary's Church Community Hall, Allens Hill, Bozeat. NN29 7LW. Whilst there are no legal restrictions that apply, the choir has chosen to continue to exercise caution and behave covid-19 responsibly as we recommenced singing together.

On Monday 15 August 2022 the choir held its first public performance since the Covid 19 restrictions were imposed. We had 18 members sing two pieces, Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Hallelujah at the wedding of Pat's grand-daughter at Saint Mary's Church in Bozeat.

We met for lunch at the Bell Inn, Odell on Thursday 11 August 2022. Most of us walked from the Harrold end of the Country Park to Odell and back afterwards. A very pleasant catch up, thank you Lorraine.

There was a social evening held at the Woolaston Inn on Saturday 27th March 2022. We had a lovely meal followed by a light hearted quiz. Many thanks to Jenny for organising the event and to the staff at the restaurant.

The Singers were delighted recently to be given a painting of the original Bozeat Windmill, painted by Fred Rivett 80 to 90 years ago. Fred was John's grandfather (1879-1963) and he lived in Wollaston. As the windmill has long since been dismantled, the painting is not only valued as our emblem, but it is a real piece of history.

John and Caroline have many of Fred's paintings and drawings and are generously continuing to do just what Fred did in his life time, which is to give them away to people to whom they mean something special. Fred was prolific in his work and especially liked churches and village street scenes, many of which became his subjects in south Northamptonshire. The picture is shown below.

Six choir members sang at the wedding of Marian Brown’s daughter Emma on 10 July 2020, under Covid 19 restrictions. Marian was our first Musical Director.

We have found a larger venue for rehearsals at the St. Mary's Church Community Hall, Allens Hill, so that we are able to comply with any Covid 19 restrictions in the future.

The choir received a certificate from The Dogs for Good charity, which we supported in 2019.

We held our last January Dinner before the pandemic at the Donzella Restaurant in Olney on Saturday 19 January 2020. The restaurant has recently changed hands. Thanks to Lorraine for organising the event and to Jeff and Josie for setting and running the quiz. Thanks also to all the staff at Donzella for a lovely meal.

Our Annual Christmas Concert, was held on Saturday 14 December 2019 in Bozeat Church Hall, Allens Hill, Bozeat NN29 7LW. The event was well attended and we were honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Wellingborough. The programme was varied, with solos and a monologue, as well as the carols and Christmas songs performed by the full choir. Particular favourites were "Let It Go" from the film Frozen and "O Come All Ye Faithful".

On Tuesday 8 October 2019 a cheque for £370.00 was presented to Bob Bolton of the charity "Dogs for Good". The money was raised at our annual Charity Concert Held in June.

Bob brought along his latest Puppy in training as an Assist Dog, which will help people with disability, both physical and mental. Bob and his dog sat in on our rehearsal and Bob made a short acceptance speech.
